Abstract

1,228,948. Ionographic apparatus. RANK XEROX Ltd. Oct. 14, 1968 [Oct. 18, 1967], No.48549/68. Heading G2H. In an ionographic imaging apparatus in which a stream of charged particles falls on to the surface of an insulator according to imaging radiation, the retarding electric field created by deposited charge is neutralized by simultaneously produced adjacent charges. In one embodiment the pattern of X-rays from a source 14 transmitted by an object 12 passes through a cathode 16, having a photoemissive layer 18, from which electrons are ejected towards an anode 20 in contact with a photoconductive layer 28 coated with an insulating layer 30. With a quenching gas between the electrodes avalanching occurs and the amplified electron image falls on to the insulator 30 previously charged to a positive potential. The positive surface charge is neutralized imagewise as the induced negative charge between layers 28 and 30 is conducted to electrode 20 imagewise through layer 28 thus reducing the retarding field of the deposited charge. In a second embodment Fig. 2, (not shown) the photoconductive layer 28 is omitted and a photo-emissive layer is coated on the opposite side of the anode from the insulative layer. Deposition of negative charge on the insulative layer (58) is compensated by simultaneous emission of electrons from the layer (60). In this case two electrostatic images are formed. The layer (60) may be formed of a low work function material in which case the electrons liberated by X-rays are collected by the electrode in contact with the layer, Figs.3 and 4, (not shown).
