Abstract
1,231,372. Treating molten metal; making S.G. iron. GEORG FISCHER A.G. Jan.24, 1969 [Jan.26, 1968; Dec.3, 1968], No.4276/69. Heading C7D. Vapourizable additives are initially segregated in one compartment of a vessel to which molten metal is charged, the two then being brought into restricted contact by tilting the vessel so that vapourization is retarded. Suitable apparatus consists of a vessel 1 having an internal compartment 3 into which the additive can be charged through an opening which is subsequently closed by plug 4. The compartment has a number of openings through which metal can enter and vapour escape when the vessel is tilted. The process is particularly applicable to the treatment of iron with magnesium to produce S.G. iron; at the same time a carburizing agent may be added to the surface of the bath.
