Abstract
1,231,405. Coated carpet. DOVERSTRAND Ltd. 25 Aug., 1969 [19 Sept., 1968], No. 44623/ 68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division D1] Tufted or woven carpets are produced by attaching the tufts to a base material comprising woven polypropylene, applying latex composition to the tufted base and heating to secure the latex composition to the base and to the tufts, the surface of the base material being treated to increase its adherance to the latex composition either by oxidation or by the application of a primer coat. The base material may be woven uniaxially oriented polypropylene tape tufted with a nylon loop pile. The oxidation treatment may comprise corona discharge, chemical oxidation or flame treatment. The primer coat can be atactic polypropylene optionally modified with maleic anhydride, polyvinyl acetate, butadiene copolymers with acrylonitrile and/or methyl methacrylate, copolymers of methyl methacrylate or styrene with butadiene, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid or esters thereof, copolyesters of terephthalic acid, polyamides, copolymers of vinylidene chloride with acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, alkyl acrylate, itaconic acid, methacrylic and acrylic acid. It can be applied as a solution or dispersion, e.g. by spraying, spreading, immersion, to the base material in final form or during manufacture e.g. in the case of uniaxially oriented tape the coating can be applied to the oriented tape which is then woven, or to the unoriented tape which is subsequently drawn and woven. The latex may comprise natural rubber or synthetic thermoplastic material e.g. a copolymer of butadiene with an unsaturated monomer containing at least one carboxylic acid group e.g. itaconic acid, methacrylic/acrylic acid and styrene and/or methyl methacrylate, together with pigments e.g. calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide or lithopone, thickeners, anti-foaming agents. A further layer of surface treated polypropylene or a layer of jute hessian may be applied on top of the latex.
