Abstract

1,231,486. Shipboard launching and recovery equipment. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 18 Nov., 1969 [18 Nov., 1968], No. 54598/68. Heading B7S. A launching frame 8 is provided at one end with a clamp unit 14 capable of supporting a submersible vessel 17 to be launched from a ship S and the launching frame is mounted in the ship for movement from an inboard storage position to a position in which the end of the frame carrying the clamp unit extends outboard of the ship. Arms 4 and hydraulic piston and cylinder unit 6 tilt the frame 8 when extended, downwards to submerge vessel 17 whilst supported by the clamp unit and hydraulic piston and cylinder unit 16 actuate the clamp unit to release the submerged vessel to permit it to be towed at the end of towing cable 18. The clamp unit 14 is provided with guides 15 at its forward end to locate the cable 18 so as to guide the vessel 17 into a position in which it can be re-engaged by the clamp unit for recovery to the ship. Vessel 17 may house a sonar device or other device for oceanographic survey work.
