Abstract

1,231,651. Dry-bright wax polishes. A. E. STALEY MFG. CO. 8 April, 1968 [9 May, 1967], No. 16694/68. Heading C5W. [Also in Division C3] Buffable dry-bright polishes comprise a wax, at least one nonionic or anionic surface-active agent and a random or graft copolymer having an average monomer Tg of at least 40 C. and comprising units of (A) 1-15% by weight of an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated acid, (B) 45- 85% by weight of ethylenically unsaturated hard monomer selected from monovinyl aromatic compounds, α,#-ethylenically unsaturated nitriles and hard esters of α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, (C) 10-40% by weight of at least one waxy ester which is a straight-chain alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid wherein the alkyl group has at least 12 carbon atoms and (D) 0-30% by weight of soft alkyl ester of α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid in which the alkyl group is a primary alkyl group of less than 12 C atoms and/or a secondary alkyl group; the total content of components (C) and (D) being 10-50% by weight of the copolymer. The polishes may contain 2 to 300 parts by weight of wax per 100 parts by weight of copolymer solids. Suitable waxes include carnauba, candelilla, microcrystalline, Fischer-Tropsch, polyethylene, oxidized polyethylene, modified montan or ester, mixed rosin amine/polyethylene and ethylene-acrylate ester copolymer waxes, and mixtures thereof. Optional polish additives such as alkali-soluble resins (natural or synthetic), levelling agents, softeners (plasticizers) and coalescing agents may also be included.
