[Also in Division Cl] Sewage is aerated in an aeration space into which air is introduced by a plurality of rotating diffusers near the bottom of the space, rotation of the body of sewage therein being braked by the introduction of sewage taking place near the bottom of the aerating space and discharge near the top, or vice versa, so that the air bubbles rise obliquely. In Figure 1 the diffusers 6 rotate in an aerating space 3 defined by a wall 4 spaced both from the bottom 1 and the liquid surface; the wall 4 may be telescopic being supported by floats 16 and having guide vanes 13. In another embodiment, Figures 3 and 4, the aerating device may cause circulation between two elongated tanks 7 through ports 9, 10, the boundary wall 2 of the tanks and that 4 of the aerating space being coincident for about half the periphery of the latter. The central dividing wall 12 may be continued to the diffuser support 8 by partition 11, 11′ having a slot 15 for passage of the air supply pipe. These may be fixed diffusers (14) in the tanks 7 (see Figure 7, not shown); the speed of circulation prevents sludge settling in the tanks 7. The diffusers may be oval in cross-section to reduce resistance, or to convey the sewage upwardly or downwardly when angled to the horizontal, and there may be diffusers at more than one level.
