Abstract

1,231,980. Diaminodiphenyl methane. UPJOHN CO. 4 July, 1969 [6 Aug., 1968], No. 33784/69. Heading C2C. Di-(aminophenyl) -methanes which contain substantial amounts of the 2,41– and 2,21-isomers are prepared by mixing aniline and formaldehyde in a molar ratio of at least 3.5 1; removing the water of condensation liberated in the aniline-formaldehyde condensation product; heating the resulting anhydrous product to a temperature of 125-205 C.; adding thereto a catalytic amount of a proton source, e.g. hydrogen chloride or aniline hydrochloride; and finally isolating the product from the reaction mixture. The reaction mixture consists of methylene-bridged polyphenyl polyamines wherein the major single component is di-(aminophenyl)-methane in which the isomer proportions are as follows: 4,41 15-85 weight per cent, 2,41 10-60 weight per cent and 2,21 5-25 weight per cent. Phosgenation of the said mixture results in the corresponding polyphenyl polyisocyanates containing a substantial amount of di-(isocyanatophenyl)-methane. Di- (aminophenyl) -methane can be separated from the polyamine mixture and separately phosgenated, if desired.
