Abstract
1,232,754. Multiplying circuits. BENDIX CORP. 5 Aug., 1969 [4 Sept., 1968], No. 39183/69. Heading G4G. A time division multiplier circuit includes means for producing a first, a second, and a reference signal; an integrator for integrating the first signal, and a comparator for comparing the integrator output to a predetermined voltage level and for providing a sense of output dependent upon the comparison; and switching means connected to the integrator, the comparator, and the reference signal and second signal means, and responsive to the sense of the comparator output for summing the reference signal into the integrator to drive the integrator output in the opposite sense and produce a sawtooth waveform which has a duty cycle proportional to the first signal and gates the second signals, whereby to provide a pulse train which, when passed through a filter connected to the switching means, provides an output corresponding to the product of the first and second signals. In the circuit shown, for multiplying together signals E 1 and E 2 from sources 2 and 4, signal E 1 is fed to an integrator 12, to which a bias voltage from source 28 may be applied via a switch 10, the output from the integrator being applied to the comparator 14, which has an output of fixed amplitude the sense of which is determined by the amplitude of the input. When the integrator output attains a given value, requring a time b, it produces a reversal in sense of the output of the comparator 14, such that relay 18 is operated via the diode 16, to reverse the positions of switches 4, 10 and 20. The negative voltage 28 is thereby applied to the integrator via associated resistors and the summing element 8, producing a reversal of sense of the integrator output and a decrease in its rate of change such that the next reversal of the comparator output, to initiate repetition of the cycle, occurs after a further time a. During time a, since switch 4 is closed, the signal E 2 is applied to filter 9 which provides an output equal to the average of its input; since the amplitude of the pulse is E 2 , while the ratio a/a + b is proportional to E 1 , the output from the filter is proportional to the product E 1 , E 2 . The integrator and comparator include operational amplifiers, and switches 4, 10 and 20 employ field effect transistors.
