Abstract

1,232,852. Weighing apparatus; determining moisture content. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. July 24, 1968, [Aug. 16, 1967], No.35303/68. Headings G1S and G1W. [Also in Division G4] Apparatus for supplying a blast furnace 12 with quantities of coke dependent upon their moisture content comprises a device for weighing coke fed from a supply to the blast furnace 12, a device for obtaining samples of coke from the supply, a device for drying the samples and devices for weighing the samples before and after they are dried, all the weighing devices being arranged to control the amount of coke fed from the supply. As shown, a weigh hopper 18 is arranged to receive coke from a feeder 16 which is controlled by a device 32 connected to the weigh hopper and set to feed batches of predetermined weights to the weigh hopper, the feeder being arranged above a vibratory device 20 which diverts coke fines to a bin 22. A conveyer 42 is arranged to collect samples from the bin 22 and pass such samples over weighing devices 48, 52 and through an oven 50. Weight signals from the devices 48, 52, indicative of the moisture content of the coke, are fed together with input data to a digital control system 40 which provides an output to modify the setting of the device 32 in accordance with the moisture content of the coke when a weight of coke just less than the predetermined weight is in the hopper 18 the feeder 16 is automatically stopped but the vibratory device is maintained operative for a short time to bring the load in the hopper up to the predetermined weight. The hopper 18 is then emptied and the weighed coke is delivered to the blast furnace by a conveyer or skip hoist system.
