Abstract

1,237,492. Measuring velocity electrically. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. May 15, 1969 [June 17, 1968], No.24814/69. Heading G1N. [Also in Divisions G5, H2] In a linear positioning device, particularly for positioning transducers in a magnetic storage device, comprising a fixed field system 29 … 32 and a linearly-movable member 36 carrying a drive coil 35, the member 36 carries permanent magnets 67, 68, Fig. 2, movable within seriesconnected sensing coils 63, 66 which together form a velocity detector. As shown, the field system comprises an open frame, the sides 29, 30 of which are permanent magnets and the side 31 has a polepiece 27 extending into an aperture in polepiece 32 so as to define an annular air-gap. The member 36 surrounds polepiece 27 and moves through the annular air-gap. The sensing coils are housed in bores 60, 61 in polepiece 27 and the permanent magnets 67, 68 form part of rods 69, 70 movable with the member 36, opposite poles of the magnets being arranged adjacent each other. This arrangement together with the series connection of the coils as in Fig. 3 (not shown) ensures that induction affects of the drive coil and eddy currents in the field system in the coils are substantially cancelled. The member 36 is formed integral with a carriage 13 guided for movement along a rail 19 and carrying arms 12 which support transducers 11 co-operating with storage discs 10. Current is supplied to the coil 35 through a control device 53 which reverses the driving current as the member 36 approaches a selected position thereby providing a decelerating force, the point at which such current reversal occurs being determined by the magnitude of the signal from the velocity detector.
