Abstract

1,243,285. Cooling expandable materials during extrusion. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 9 Dec., 1969 [15 Jan., 1969], No. 2412/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B1] Screw-extruded polystyrene, expanded by 8% by weight of methyl chloride, is cooled between the end of the screw and the die by passage through a plurality of cylindrical channels, e.g. 17, 18, cooled by a fluid, e.g. stream, and the product of the length and perimeter of each whereof is at least 50 times its area of crosssection, and with the total area of all the channels being at least half the cross-sectional area of the extruder barrel enclosing the screw. The channels may comprise holes drilled through a block of aluminium, steel, copper, or brass which is cooled by a surrounding fluid, but in the preferred embodiment the channels comprise tubes 17, 18 of these materials fixed between end-pieces 19, 20 which are strengthened by a central thicker walled tube 21 and located within a body 1 by body pieces 5 and 7, respectively, fixing to the extruder barrel and die. The location with the body piece 7 is sealed with an annealed copper gasket 14, and with the body piece 5 provision is made by a clearance 24 for the differential expansion of the tubes, with sealing effected by surrounding rings 22 and 23 of cast iron and polytetrafluoroethylene. The end pieces 19, 20 are supported against the compressive effect of extrusion pressure by a pair of bridging semi-cylindrical exterior shells 2, 3, through which the cooling fluid passes at 15 and 16 to circulate around the exterior of the tubes 17, 18.
