Abstract
1,243,939. Sleeves for textile bobbins. PAULSBORO CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Inc. 12 May, 1970 [27 Oct., 1969], No. 23014/70. Heading B8M. [Also in Division B3] A process for modifying a surface composed of a thermoplastic organic polymer such as the sleeve of a textile bobbin comprises blasting the surface with beads of silicon glass. The polymer may consist of a hydrocarbon polymer such as polyethylene or polypropylene a formaldehyde polyacetal, such as nylon, a tetrafluoropolyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, or a resilient copolymer or terpolymer. The polymer may be extruded or moulded and be in the form of a sleeve for a yarn bobbin, drinking cup, glass plate, handle for a brush, hammer or screwdriver, a toy, mat and the like. After forming, the polymer is cooled and passed into a chamber under a vacuum of 211 mercury and blasted with silica glass beads which are resistant to disintegration, range in size from 0À0021 to 0À0165 inch and pass through nozzles arranged around the polymer and connected to an air supply.
