Abstract
1,246,335. Radiant heaters. E. E. STRAND. 5 Dec., 1968, No. 57889/68. Headings F4B and F4T. A high temperature radiant gas heater comprises an inverted tank 34, 36, 37, of mild steel, two adjoining sets of screens 7, 27 secured across the tank opening, a parabolic reflector 33, preferably of stainless steel, secured in the tank to face the screens and forming therewith and with end plates 35 a plenum chamber 32 into which fuel gas is introduced, by a pipe 38 and a perforate distributer header 39, so that it passes into the screens for surface combustion outside and forwardly of the chamber 32, the reflector 33 and the tank forming a chamber 31 communicating with a tank inlet 40 and outlet 41 and with an open-ended conduit 53 between the sets of screens to provide for circulation of a coolant fluid, e.g. water, at the back of the reflector. The assembly is mounted in a frame 28, Fig. 3 (not shown), with the interposition of heat insulation 44 at the tank sides 34, and several such heaters are placed side-by-side so that upstanding walls 28c of the frame 28 together with associated flange portions 28d, Fig. 1 (not shown), form flues 50 for the burnt gas. A plate 48 secured below the screens forms therewith a combustion chamber 49 sealed from the atmosphere by liquid seals 51 and serves to absorb and re-radiate the heat from the screens, while preventing combustion products from reaching the area of heat application 52. The screens, which may be of perforate cloth of graphite, silicon carbide or ceramiccoated chrome mesh, rather than metal mesh per se, comprise, Fig. 7, (not shown), going outwards of chamber 32, a safety screen (24) to prevent flashback, burner screens (25, 26) and a reverberator screen 27 for reflecting heat back to screens 25, 26. The header 39 is divided by a perforate plate 39a diagonally along its length. In a further embodiment intended for use, e.g. in a circular thermal reactor, Figs. 11, 12, the heaters form segments of the circle. Each coolant circulatory system comprises peripheral hollow members 58-61, the larger end member 61 having coolant inlet and outlet pipes and an interposed partition 61a, and a series of hollow triangular members 62 with apices down and bases slightly apart and which are provided with reflective sides interconnect the sides 58, 59 and communicate therewith by orifices 63, 64. A closed hood 66 is secured to the peripheral members 58-61 and is supplied with fuel gas and air which pass through the springs between members 62 to burn on a screen 65, secured below the system together with a reverbatory screen 69. A circular, impermeable, imperforate screen 76 is secured below the burners for absorption and re-radiation of heat and the combustion products rise between the hoods 66 into a hood 83 sealed over the heaters and from there to an exhaust stack. In a modification, Figs. 14-16 (not shown), the members intermediate the sides of the coolant system are reflecting pipes, shown as having a circular cross-section.
