Abstract
1,246,673. Drawing sheet glass. GLAVERBEL. 12 Sept., 1968 [25 Sept., 1967], No. 43491/68. Heading CIM. In a process for manufacturing sheet glass by drawing a continuous ribbon from the surface of a bath of molten glass wherein an upper forward current of glass flows from the melting furnace into a drawing kiln over a cooler return current flowing back to the melting furnace, the glass in the surface region flows up to the meniscus at the base of the ribbon, but the glass entering the ribbon is shielded at the downstream side of the meniscus from contact by glass which has flowed further downstream and has cooled. The shielding is done by a barrier at least partially immersed in the glass on the downstream side and which so divides the upper current whereby either only the quantity or more than the quantity of glass drawn into the ribbon flows into the region of the meniscus. In one embodiment an L-shaped barrier comprises a vertical portion 20 located downstream of the meniscus and extending transversely of the bath 3 with the upper portion above the glass surface and a longitudinal portion 22 submerged in the glass, and extending upstream beyond the meniscus. The depth of immersion is determined by the rate of draw. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4) a debitence 42 is used together with a submerged L-shaped barrier 41, 43. The longitudinal portion 43 of the barrier extends upstream beneath the debitence to the shut off 44 and has a threshold 45 on its upper surface to prevent the formation of secondary vortices. Alternatively the barrier may comprise a single vertical member partially immersed in the glass downstream of the meniscus either with or without a debitense. The barrier member is preferably heated to control the glass temperature in the meniscus region and is preferably made of an electrically conducting material, e.g. a cast alumina refractory, or may have heating elements thereon e.g. MoSi 2 . It is preferred that the upstream facing surface of the vertical member and the upper surface of the longitudinal member of L-shaped shields be platinum coated to prevent erosion and this can serve as the conducting medium. To prevent heat from the vertical member affecting the down sheet it may be capped with an insulating member 21. –
