1,247,322. Copolymers of m/p vinyl toluene; acrylonitrile and alpha methyl styrene. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 2 Feb., 1970 [5 Feb., 1969], No. 4862/70. Heading C3P. The invention comprises polymers made by copolymerization of 20-40% α m/p-vinyl toluene mixture, 40-55% α-methyl styrene, and 5-30% acrylonitrile (based on the total weight of components), and containing, based on the wt. of copolymer, 20-41% of vinyl toluene units, 38-54% of α-methyl styrene units and 5-28% of acrylonitrile units. The polymer preferably contains equimolar amounts of the m and p vinyl toluene units. In an example the monomers are suspension polymerized in the required monomer proportion using azobisisobutyronitrile as the catalyst, with a protective colloid which is a copolymer of N-vinyl methyl-acetamide and 2-ethylhexylacrylate in a 99 : 1 parts by weight ratio, in a nitrogen atmosphere at 70‹ C. The copolymers may be compounded with the usual ingredients to form compositions.
