Abstract
1,247,452. Moulding fibrous slurries. AMF Inc. 14 Aug., 1969 [20 Sept., 1968], No. 40727/69. Heading B5A. In the moulding, e.g. of filter cartridges, egg boxes, trays, or structural panels from vegetable, animal, or non-organic fibres, by successive suction accretion of two or more layers of different fibrous slurries 12, 44 onto a die 14 within a tank 10, the suction die 14 and a surrounding sleeve 34 are relatively movable into and out of sealing engagement within the tank 10 to permit the deposition of one or other of the slurries 12 and 44 from within the tank 10 or the sleeve 34. In the Fig. 3 embodiment, the sleeve 34 is initially moved, by a piston-rod 32, into abutment with a seal 38 on a die base at an initial position thereof above the level of slurry 12, whereafter the die 14 is downwardly displaced by a piston-rod 22, together with the sleeve 34, until the upper part of the sleeve 34 is located just above the level of slurry 12. After deposition by suction, applied through pipe 20, of the first slurry admitted to within sleeve 34 from a pipe 42, with the die 14 maintained submerged if required to exhaustion of the slurry by the admission of water through a pipe 40, the die 14 and sleeve 34 are further lowered and separated to the Fig. 3 position for deposition of the second slurry 12. After lowering sleeve 34 into sealing contact with the base 16, these are simultaneously raised out of the slurry 12 and then separated into their initial position for removal of the accreted article 28. In a modification of the Fig. 3 embodiment, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the die (14) is surrounded by a baffle (54) in the region whereof a lower sleeve portion (52) is slidable on pins (64) attached to an upper sleeve portion (50) and from which it is thereby separable, together with the die base (16), to permit access of the second slurry (12) to the die (14). In the Fig. 7 embodiment, the die base 70 is upwardly displaced with respect to the sleeve 72 for separation therefrom in the initial position out of the tank 10. After deposition of the first slurry 44 from pipe 42 into the sleeve 72 in the position thereof in sealing engagement with the die base 70 and where the upper part thereof is just above the level of the second slurry 12, the sleeve 72 is lowered to permit access and deposition of the slurry 12, on the die 66, whereafter the sleeve 72 is again raised into sealing engagement around the die base for deposition of a third slurry admitted to within the sleeve 72 from a pipe 78. In the Fig. 11 embodiment, the sleeve 92 is secured to the tank 10, and the die base 82 is lowered from an initial position, within an enlarged upper sleeve part 94, into sealing engagement within a lower sleeve part for deposition of the first slurry, and thereafter lowered beneath the sleeve 94 for deposition of the second slurry 12. The described sequences of depositing the slurries from within the tank and sleeve may be reversed. Automatic slurry level controllers may be provided.
