Abstract
1,251,975. Automatic fare collection machine. LONDON TRANSPORT BOARD, R. D. GILLANDERS, and S. HAINES. 31 Jan., 1969 [21 June, 1968], No. 29795/68. Heading G4T. An automatic fare collection machine for a road vehicle comprises a coin operated pushbutton fare selector 1 (Fig. 1), a driver controlled illuminated indicator panel 10 for fare and route data, a ticket printing and issuing machine responsive to signals from the fare selector, and circuitry connected to the other components of the system to produce a signal when a printed ticket is removed from slot 9. The signal controls an entry barrier or turnstile 5. The indicator panel 10 is updated by the driver at each fare stage by stepping a control knob. The driver also has a master ON/OFF switch and a bank of control switches. Coins or tokens are inserted in slot 2 and one of six fare buttons is pressed, or vice versa. A counter unit 4 counts the value of the coins and the number of passengers going through the turnstile 5 using counters 4a to 4g in Fig. 2a. On depression of a button, one contact from each of fare selection contacts 1/1 to 6/1, ticket printer contacts 1/2 to 6/2 and fare/passenger counter contacts 1/3 to 6/3 is depressed. The contacts of selector 1 are connected via matrix 14 to accumulator 15 which includes coin actuated contacts 16a, 16b, 16c. Relay A is then energized, contact A/l is closed, and relays K3 and K7 energized (contact K6/3A is closed when the turnstile is inoperative). Closure of K1/3 indicates that the fare button has been pressed and closure of K2/2 that fare selection is complete. When K4/1 is closed, relay K4 is not energized and there is no ticket in the slot 9. The energization of K7 deenergizes K3, energizes a ticket issuing solenoid ready to issue a ticket, and also energizes relay K9 and solenoid L to restore any depressed buttons. A ticket printer (not shown) includes 6 wheels for printing 6 values, 5 of which wheels are located by a detent operable by a solenoid, and the wheels are moved by solenoids LX, LB, LC, which are energized when contact K2/2 is closed. The printed ticket emerges at the slot 9 and this closes switch TU. Relays K4, K5 and K6 are energized and when the ticket is taken from the slot, contact K4/3 switches, relay K6 frees the turnstile 5 but when the passenger passes through it a microswitch de-energizes turnstile solenoid LH and relay K6. Interlocks prevent operation of the machine in the wrong sequence. If a ticket is already in the slot a fresh fare selection and coin insertion is negated as contacts K4/4 and K3/3 are open, the supply to the push-buttons is cut off and the coin slot is blocked by operation of solenoid LG and a blocking mechanism. If two buttons are pressed, microswitch PBU.INT (Fig. 2b). is closed twice momentarily instead of once if one button were pressed, and the coin acceptor unit is not actuated. When the vehicle driver changes the panel 10 to the next fare stage, relay K13 is de-energized relay K8 is energized and the printer reset to allow for the new data on the panel. A coin return slot 6 is also provided.
