Abstract
1,259,133. Selective embossing. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 9 Jan., 1969 [10 Jan., 1968], No. 1473/69. Heading B6F. A selective embossing tool includes an endless chain 18 of embossing dies. Each embossing die comprises a head portion 27 having a male or female embossing die formed on one face thereof, a bifurcated tail member for engagement with a selecting pinion 37, and a thin flexible laterally extending section (28), Fig. 4 (not shown), which may be joined to an adjacent die by a pin or dovetail joint, or may be integral with the adjacent die. Two chains 18, 19 may be provided, having co-operating female and male dies respectively, or a single chain (85), Fig. 6 (not shown) co-operating with a resilient anvil (86), or a pair of chains (87, 88), Fig. 7 (not shown), one formed with male dies and the other being of resilient material. Die selection is effected by means of a knob 13 having positive locations provided by engagement of a resilient post 33 with internal grooves, the knob 13 being keyed to the pinion 37. An indication of the die selected is provided by a window (15), Fig. 2 (not shown), further windows (16, 17) showing the positions of other dies on the chain or chains. Impression is effected by squeezing two body portions 11, 12 together, the body portions being pivoted at 56, so that an anvil 76 presses on the lower chain 19 to emboss an embossable tape 46 between the chains. The tape is stored in a roll or magazine 45, the chains describing an oval path around the magazine. The tape is fed by a drive roller 51 co-operating with an idler roller 52, the drive roller being advanced by a pawl 73 and ratchet 63 when the body portions are allowed to return to normal position under a spring 75. During impression action, a post 43 engages slots 42 in a collar 39 fixed to the knob 13 to hold the chains 18, 19 in place.
