Abstract

1,259,297. Palladium-on-carbon catalysts. STANDARD OIL CO. 19 Dec., 1968 [20 Dec., 1967], No. 60436/68. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C2] Catalyst consisting of metallic palladium having a crystallite surface area upward from 0.6 m2/g supported on carbon having a surface area upward from 1000 m2/g is prepared by a process which comprises depositing a reducible compound of palladium on solid carbon support material having a surface area upward from 1000 m2/g and thereafter reducing the deposited palladium compound to metallic palladium in a hydrogen atmosphere at a temperature not greater than 538C. The metallic palladium may constitute from 0.1 to 10 weight per cent of the catalyst. The carbon, which may be in the form of filaments, rods, gauze, flakes, spheres, pellets or granules, preferably has a surface area of from 1500 to 5000 m2/g. As exemplified, the catalyst may be prepared either by suspending a gauze of carbon filaments in an aqueous solution of palladium chloride, drying the treated gauze and subjecting the dried gauze to reduction in a hydrogen atmosphere, for example at a temperature of 370C, or by mixing extruded carbon pellets with palladium hydrosol thereby to coat the pellets, drying the coated pellets and subjecting the dried pellets to reduction in a hydrogen atmosphere, for example at a temperature of 200-225C, or by stirring carbon granules in an aqueous solution of palladium nitrate, recovering the granules, drying the recovered granules and subjecting the dried granules to reduction in a hydrogen atomsphere, for example at a temperature of 455C. The catalyst may be used in the removal of formyl-substituted aromatic acid, for example p-formylbenzoic acid, from impure phthalic acid, for example terephthalic acid and/or isophthalic acid.
