Abstract

1,261,969. Attaching fairings to ropes. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 18 Feb., 1969 [20 Feb., 1968], No. 8641/69. Heading D1T. An apparatus Fig. 7 for attaching fairings 23 to a marine tow-line 24 comprises a sheave around which the line and fairings pass, the sheave having an inner wheel 73 on the periphery of which the line 24 rests, and guide faces 83, 84 spaced radially outward of and to either side of the inner wheel 73, these guide faces 83, 84 rotating with the wheel 73 and pressing the fairings 23 onto the line 24 as shown. Each fairing 23 has a cylindrical opening 42 in its leading edge, the sides of this opening being lined with spring clips 45, 46 that grip a tow-line when pushed into the opening 42. As shown in Fig. 3 the spring clips 45, 46 have end portions 47, 48 that extend into a slit interconnecting the opening 42 with a further opening 41. A bolt passes through the fairing 23 and said end parts 47, 48. The fairings are mounted on a common rope passing through aperture 41. Alternatively the fairings are interconnected by links. The string of fairings are part of the subject matter claimed in the claims.
