Abstract
1,267,690. Collets. HARDINGE BROS. Inc. 15 Aug., 1969 [9 Oct., 1968], No. 40879/69. Heading B3B. A collet operable by movement, e.g. by a lathe draw-bar 19, relative to a surface 20 of a spindle 14 comprises a body 12 having a head which is divided into segments 24 by slots 22 the slots being filled at the longitudinally outer end by resilient seals 30 to prevent ingress of oil, dirt &c. The collet head may include work gripping pads 26. Bores are drilled in the slots parallel to the axis of the body to receive enlarged portions 31 of the seals, and a portion of the seal extends from the bores to the work-engaging surface of the segments 24 or pads 26. The seals may be formed of rubber or synthetic plastics material and are inserted from the longitudinally outer end of the collet and may be cut to the required radial length in situ. The head of the collet may be formed separately from the body (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown), the head being retained by interengaging keys and keyways and a retaining ring holding the segments of the head together. In this embodiment radially disposed resilient plugs (68) act as seals and as a resilient opening means for the segments. Further seals (70) are provided between the slots of the segments from the longitudinally outer face of the collet to engage the plugs (68) to complete the seal.
