Abstract

1,268,656. Olefin polymers. – ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 15 Aug., 1969 [16 Sept., 1968], No. 40975/69. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C5] A polymer of n-C 22-28 alpha olefins is made by adding a solution of the olefins in toluene to a solution of TiCl 3 1/ 3 AlCl 3 and Al(n-C 3 H 8 ) 3 in toluene and heating at 70-80‹ C.; the polymer formed is precipitated with methanol. Homopolymers of octadecene-1, eicosene-1 and docosene-1 and copolymers of docosene-1 with hexene-1, of docosene-1 with styrene, of n- C 22-28 alpha olefins with hexene-1, and of n- C 22-28 alpha olefins with 4-methyl-pentane-1 1 are similarly made. – A copolymer of propylene and n-C 22-28 alpha olefins is made by adding a solution of the C 22-28 olefins in n-hexane to a solution of Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 and TiCl 3 Y 3 AlC 3 in xylene at 70- 80‹ C. in an autoclave and then pressurising tne autoclave with propylene; the polymer formed has a molecular weight of 1890 after precipitating with methanol. A copolymer of molecular weight 3350 is made by reacting liquid butene-1 and docosene-1 1 in a catalyst/solvent mixture of toluene, nheptane Al(n-C 3 H 8 ) 3 and TiCl 3 1/ 3 AlCl 3 . Copolymers of octadecene-1 with butene-1 and of docosene-1 with butene-1 1 are similarly prepared.
