Abstract
1286405 Reciprocating pumps or motors K R DIXON 20 July 1970 [28 July 1969] 34994/70 Heading F1A A radial pump or motor comprises a relatively rotatable shaft 2 and cylinder block and casing assembly 4, 12, pistons 7 in the block slidably bearing against flats 42 in casing 12 which is eccentrically mounted relative to the block. The working pressure in the cylinders 6 is transmitted to flats 42 via bores 13 and recesses 14, the area of the recess being slightly less than the crosssectional area of the cylinder, so that radially outward hydraulic forces are borne directly by casing 12, apart from a slight force for maintaining the pistons in contact with flats 42. The radially inward forces due to the working areas of the cylinders are balanced by the forces due to the effective areas of recesses 37. Shaft 2 is formed as a pintle valve with distributor grooves 21, 22. Radial forces between casing 12 and shaft 2 are balanced by recesses 56, Fig. 4, in the casing sequentially registering with recesses 31, 32 corresponding but directionally opposed to valve ports 21, 22, and connected to the ports by passages 26, 27. Block 4 and casing 12 are coupled by followers 41 on block arms 39 engaging recesses 40 in casing 12. In alternative embodiments, Figs. 11 to 15 (not shown), the eccentricity of the casing relative to the block is adjustable hydraulically, and the cylinder block comprises a plurality of separate cylinders located by clamping ring assemblies. Sealing arrangements for the pistons, cylinder block and pintle are described, Figs. 5 to 10 (not shown).
