Abstract
1286439 Vehicle seats RECARD A G 28 Nov 1969 [31 Jan 1969] 3184/72 Divided out of 1285360 Heading A4J [Also in Division F2] A vehicle seat 301 which is connected to a base by a front supporting leg 304 pivotally connected the base and the seat, is provided with a seat belt, one end of which is attached to the back of the seat and an energy dissipating means 308 which absorbs energy when the seat is moved by the weight of the occupant against the seat belt on sudden acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle. The height of the seat may be adjusted by altering the length of rod 307. In a second embodiment, Fig.2 (not shown) a rear leg (315) which is rigid with the seat has its lower end slidably mounted in an upwardly and forwardly inclined slot (320) in a bracket secured to the base (316) and the energy dissipating means (318) is connected between the lower ends of the front and rear legs. In a modification of the second embodiment, Figs.3-4 (not shown) a further supporting leg (331) with a slot (332) therein is connected between the centre of the seat part and the lower end of the rear leg (325), the energy dissipating means (328) being connected between the lower end of the front leg (324) and the slot in the further leg (331). A hook (333) is provided to hold the energy dissipating means in the upper end of the slot in the normal position of the seat and to release the energy dissipating means so that the seat may be tilted forwardly for access to the space behind the seat. In a second modification of the second embodiment, Figs.6-8 (not shown), the slot in which the rear leg is slidable is curved upwardly at the front end thereof, to tilt the seat backwards as it moves forwards, and the seat is held in its normal position by a stop projection (354) on the seat frame (342) resting on the front of the front leg and the front leg (344) is prevented from pivoting forwardly by a shearing pin (355) which forms the energy dissipating means. After this pin is sheared a further stop pin (356) comes into effect; both pins can be withdrawn laterally of the seat to allow it to be moved freely when desired. The shearing pin may be supplemented by other energy dissipating means such as a friction brake at one or each of the pivots of each front leg.
