Abstract

1286669 Mass spectrometers; ionization manometers PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 Oct 1969 [26 Oct 1969] 51926/69 HeadingHlD A mass spectrometer device comprisse an ion source 1, an ion separator section 2 with a sector field to produce the ion separation and an ion collector 3 having an ion collector current measuring device 24, and includes an arrangement whereby, by selecting either a constant voltage or pulsed voltage supply to the ion accelerator electrodes 13, 14, 15 and 16 of the ion source, the device functions, as desired, either as a mass spectrometer or as an ionization manometer in which the ion collector current is a measure of the overall pressure of the gas to be analysed. A » constant voltage » is one which is substantially constant at least during a time corresponding to the transmit time of the ions in the ion source, and a » pulsed voltage » is one in which the duration of the voltage pulses is small with respect to the transmit time of the ions in the ion source. When a constant voltage supply is applied to the accelerator electrodes of the ion source 1 ions of the same energy to charge ratio are extracted, and if these are fed, as shown, into a magnetic sector field, which selects ions according to the square root of their mass to charge ratio, only ions of a given charge-to-mass ratio will follow path 23 to be collected on electrode 22, and the device functions as a mass spectrometer. However, with a pulsed voltage supply to the accelerator electrodes ions of constant momentum-to-charge ratio are extracted from the ion source so that all the ions in the magnetic sector field follow the path 23 to the ion collector 22 and the device functions as an ionization manometer. Conversely an electrostatic sector field may be used, Fig. 2 (not shown), and by similar resaoning the device will function as a mass spectrometer if the accelerator electrodes have a pulsed voltage supply and as an ionization manometer with a constant voltage supply.
