1288918 Reforming naphtha ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 23 Dec 1969 [15 Jan 1969] 62645/69 Heading C5E An improved hydroforming process comprises the steps of preheating a feed of a hydrocarbon fraction boiling within the range of 50 to 450 F. to a temperature between 750 and 1150 F.; passing said preheated hydrocarbon fraction downwardly through a first fixed bed of catalyst, said first fixed bed of catalyst comprising a hydroforming catalyst in its upper portion and a selective hydrocracking catalyst comprising hydrogen erionite in its lower portion; preheating at least a portion of the effluent from the first fixed bed to a temperature between 750 and 1150 F.; passing at least a portion of said preheated effluent from said first fixed bed over at least one additional fixed bed of hydroforming catalyst; and recovering a product having an improved octane rating, as compared to the feed, from the final stage. The hydroforming catalyst may be an oxide or sulphide of a Group IV, V, VI, VII or VIII metal on alumina gel, alumina, zinc-alumina spinel, chromia-alumina or silicaalumina. Molybdena-alumina and platinumalumina are preferred. The hydrogenation catalyst combined with the erionite may be a metal or oxide of Groups Vb, VIb, VIIb or VIII of the Periodic Table (U.S. version), e.g. Co, Ni, W, Pt, or Pd. In examples the feedstock is naphtha.
