Abstract
1289192 Styrene/substituted styrene copolymers SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 29 June 1970 [30 June 1969] 31467/70 Heading C3P Novel copolymers of styrene are derived from 100 parts by weight of styrene or a mixture of styrene as a major constituent and at least one other vinyl monomer and a combined amount of 10 to 100 parts by weight of a mixture consisting of 35-85 wt. per cent of a m-alkyl α-alkyl styrene and 65-15 wt. per cent of a p-alkyl α- alkyl styrene. Other vinyl monomers which may be used are o-chloro styrene, vinyl toluene, α- methyl styrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, and methyl and ethyl acrylate and methacrylate. The alkyl groups in the two substituted styrene monomers are preferably C 1-4 , the preferred compounds being m-methyl α-methyl styrene, and p-methyl α-methyl styrene, which are used in the examples. Polymerization is preferably effected in bulk or suspension at 70-200‹ C. or emulsion at 40-100‹ C., the usual initiators and dispersing or emulsifying agents (where appropriate) being used.
