Abstract
1289716 Extruding plastics netting G S NALLE Jnr 12 Sept 1969 [20 Sept 1968 25 Sept 1968] 45197/69 Heading B5A [Also in Division D1] Extruded plastics netting comprising intersecting sets of parallel strands is made using relatively rotating dies 17, 18, Fig. 2, with the strands of one set being extruded through slots 31, each such slot having one end nearer a circle of extrusion orifices 30 such that in operation the set of strands extruded from orifices 30 are bonded over a portion only of the width of the strands from slots 31, see also Fig. 5. In the die construction shown, the ribbons and filaments bond downstream of the dies, although bonding may occur at the die, see Fig. 4.(not reproduced). The product, Fig. 5, comprises ribbons 35 and filaments 36, the latter being bonded as at 38 across part only of the width of the ribbons. In the embodiment of Figs. 3 and 6 (not shown) both sets of strands are in the form of overlapping ribbons, and in the embodiment of Fig. 7 (not shown), the ribbons are bonded externally to two intersecting sets of filaments. The ribbons may be of various cross-sectional shapes, the filaments may be tubular, and the materials of the sets of strands may differ in composition or colour. A different coloured plastics may be delivered to each extrusion orifice. Plastics specified are polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, a vinyl polymer or copolymer, styrene or acrylic polymers or copolymers, and cellulosic material. The material may be foamed. The extrusion apparatus comprises means for cooling the extrudate such as a water bath 29, Fig. 1 (not shown), or a supply of expanding gas.
