Abstract
1290130 Electro-chemical analysis F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO A G 31 Aug 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 40636/71 Heading G1N A method of detecting presence or measuring flow, uses a marking substance introduced into the sample through a wall or membrane permeable to the substance and detected by an electrode external to another permeable wall section. Applications mentioned are measuring flow of blood and testing for leaks. As shown Fig. 2 water flowing in a tube 16 is «marked» by hydrogen admitted through a valve 23 to a hydrogenpermeable membrane 18 e.g. of P.T.F.E., and the arrival of the hydrogen downstream is detected by electrodes 13, 20 abutting a permeable partition 21. The resulting signal from the electrodes is amplified at 24 and applied to a paper-feed type recorder 25 which is started simultaneously with the opening of the hydrogen valve. For determining blood circulation the patient inhales one breath of 10% hydrogen in nitrogen gas. The hydrogen is absorbed in the lungs and detected when it reaches an electrode applied to a suitable body part e.g. the corner of the eye Fig.3 (not shown).
