Abstract

1292406 Cellular building elements SOC ITALIANA RESINE SpA 8 Dec 1970 [23 Dec 1969] 58319/70 Headings C3C, C3N and C3P In the manufacture of light building elements, having a density of 0À2 to 0À8 kg./cu. dm., by the hardening of mixtures comprising cement, water and granular expanded polystyrene, the particles of expanded polystyrene, with a bulk density of 16 to 28 kg./cu. m., are treated before being blended with cement and water, with an aqueous dispersion comprising an epoxy adhesive, 10 to 30% by weight of a hardener for the epoxy adhesive based on the weight of the adhesive and a hydrocarbon solvent, the solvent being used in a quantity of 0À1 to 4À0 kg. to every cu. m. of particles of polystyrene. Normal cements of the type known as 325, high strength cements (425), high strength and rapid hardening cements (525), aluminous cement (525), and cements for retaining dams (225) may be used. Proportions by weight of water : cement of 0À4:1 to 0À5:1 are preferred. The epoxy adhesive may be a polyepoxy compound monoepoxy compound mixture in a ratio of 0À3:1 to 1:1, or may comprise a liquid condensation product of a dihydric phenol with epichlorhydrin with an epoxy equivalent of 180 to 220 and a viscosity of 6000 to 23,000 cps., or an aryl glycidyl ether or alkyl glycidyl ether, especially butyl glycidyl ether. Preferred hydrocarbon solvents are benzene, toluene and the xylenes. From 1 to 8 kg. of epoxy adhesive may be used for every cu. m. of expanded polystyrene. Specified hardeners include methylene diamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine and phenyl glycidyl ether and tetraethylene pentamine based adducts. Surface-active substances, especially addition products of ethylene oxide and alkyl phenols, and the sulphonated alcohols, may be used in the preparation of the aqueous dispersions of the epoxy adhesives. Examples are given.
