Abstract

1294986 Ethylene polymer compositions GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 5 Nov 1970 [5 Jan 1970] 52651/70 Heading C3P Curable compositions comprise (1) a polymeric constituent comprising an ethylene polymer, (2) a cross-linking agent therefor and (3) 2 to 5 parts by weight per 100 parts of the polymeric constituent of a silicone fluid having a viscosity not greater than 100 centistokes at 25 C. The polymeric constituent may be a polyethylene or blend thereof with a polymer of vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate, propylene or butene-1, or a copolymer of ethylene, e.g. with propylene or vinyl acetate. The cross-linking agent may be an organic peroxide, e.g. dicumyl peroxide. The silicone fluid may be a dimethyl-, methylphenyl- or methylvinyl-polysiloxane The compositions may also contain fillers, e.g. carbon black, aluminium silicate, aluminium oxide, calcium silicate, silica, magnesium silicate or titanium dioxide; antioxidants, e.g. polymerized trimethyl dihydroquinoline; lubricants, e.g. calcium stearate; flame retardants, e.g. antimony trioxide; and cross-linking coagents, e.g. polybutadienes; and may be used for insulating wires and cables. Examples describe compositions of dimethyl polysiloxanes, dicumyl peroxide, polymerized trimethyl dihydroquinoline and (1-13) polyethylene and aluminium silicate, (14) polyethylene, (15) polyethylene and carbon black, (16) polyethylene and magnesium silicate, (17) polyethylene and hydrated alumina, (18) polyethylene and titanium dioxide, (19) ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and aluminium silicate and (20) ethylene/propylene copolymer and aluminium silicate.
