Abstract

1295283 Reactor control rods ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd and BRITISH NUCLEAR DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Ltd 3 April 1970 [3 April 1969] 17702/69 Heading G6C A reactor control rod comprises a plurality of hollow elements of which at least some are neutron-absorptive, held end-to-end on a tiebar provided at at least one of its ends with an end piece engaging a first one of the elements, the tie-bar including intermediate its two ends at least one region at which it is separable into two parts when stressed transversely, and at least a second one of the hollow elements being provided internally with means for applying a localized transverse force to the above region in the event of the second element being forced transversely relative to the tie-bar, thereby to separate the tie-bar at this region. In one embodiment (Fig. 2), the elements 10 other than the lowermost each comprise a sleeve 11 near the lower end of which is an apertured horizontal wall 12. The lowermost element 10 is normally supported on a disc 131 secured to the lower end of a tie-bar 13 which extends upwardly through the stacked elements 10 and the apertures of their walls 12. The control rod is normally disposed within a core access tube 14 which connects a standpipe with the respective control rod channel 15 in the core 16. Adjacent to the aperture in each wall 12 the tie-bar 13 is provided with a release mechanism 17, preferably a frangible segment, e.g. of sintered alumina, which snaps if subjected to a transverse force applied by the respective wall 12. Alternatively, the tie-bar could consist of a plurality of sections which between which are ball joints separate when the angular displacement of the respective sections exceeds a predetermined value. The occurrence of a serious mechanical fault in the reactor could distort the core access tube 14, as shown in Fig. 2, to jam one of the elements 10. The tie-bar 13 would then separate at the release mechanism 17 adjacent the wall 12 of the jammed element 10 to allow all the elements below the jammed element to fall into the core. At least part of the control rod will therefore fall into the core, provided the jammed element is not the lowermost element. In order that this part may be as long as possible, the lowermost element may have telescoped within it one or more additional elements.
