Abstract

1296980 Marine speedometer F G MILES ENG Ltd and CHETWODE MARINE SALES Ltd 30 Dec 1969 [31 Dec 1968] 61945/68 Headings G1N and G1R A marine speedometer comprises a rod 28 connected by a shaft 24 passing through the hull 16 of a vessel to the wiper 96 of a rheostat 98 so that the angular displacement of the rod, which displacement is opposed by a spring 74, is proportional to the vessel’s speed and produces a proportional displacement of the wiper. The rod is pivotable about a pin 44 and is biased to an horizontal position by the action of spring 52, pin 46 and cam surface 50 whereat the boss 42 engages the fork 40. Ingress of water to the transducer housing cup 20 is prevented by a resprene jacket 34 adhered to the fork 40 and to a sleeve (60), Fig. 3a (not shown). The rheostat is selectively connected to a transistor T2 forming the measuring arm of a bridge circuit made up of transistors T2, T3 and resistors T2, T3 and resistors R3, R7. Bridge output is displayed on meter 131 which with switch 5a, 5b at position 4 provides supply voltage readings. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), a buoyant ball (240) is provided so that when the rod and shaft are removed for servicing the ball rises to seal the mouth (224) of the tube 11. Total distance travelled is measured using a voltage-frequency converter 290 and a counter 292.
