1297114 Motor driving arrangements MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd and A J R PLUMMER 26 Nov 1969 [28 Nov 1968] 56499/68 Heading H2A In a drive for a machine M, such as a papercutting machine, having a part MC presenting a constant torque loading to a first shaft 1 and a part MV presenting a variable torque loading to a second shaft 2, the two parts being required to be driven in synchronism, the shafts are coupled by a drive belt 4 and are driven by first and second commutator motors A1, A2 respectively the armatures of which are connected in series to a supply SS and the field windings of which are connected to a common supply preferably SS. As shown, the belt 4 extends between pulleys 5, 6 the diameters of which are adjustable so that the ratio between the speeds of the shafts can be pre-set. Assuming that a constant supply voltage is delivered to the motors, changes in the torque loading on shaft 2 produce changes in the armature current of both motors and as the torque loading on shaft 1 is unchanged, the variations in torque output of motor A1 are passed to shaft 2 via belt 4 to assist in stabilizing the system. A tachogenerator 7 may be coupled to shaft 1 to provide a signal indicative of the speed of the shaft and which is compared with a voltage provided by a potentiometer 9 representing the desired speed of the shaft, the resulting voltage being used to control the supply SS through, for example, a thyristor regulator to maintain the speed of shaft 1 at the desired value.
