Abstract

1300206 Hub for winding magnetic tapes AMPEX CORP 19 April 1971 [1 April 1970] 24594/71 Heading B8M A hub 12 for winding a magnetic tape comprises a generally hollow cylindrical tape winding portion 13 having a partition 18 substantially centrally located in the interior thereof, the tape winding portion 13 including the partition 18 being formed with an insertion slot 14, 22 extending axially across the portion 13, radially through the portion 13 and substantially into the partition 18; the partition 18 is relieved to form a recess 26 opening into the slot 22 and is fitted with a jaw element 24 slidable in the recess diametrically toward and away from the slot 22 to form together with the slot 22 a clamp for a tape end, the jaw element 24 being spring- biased towards the slot 22; a cam is mounted in the interior of the portion 13 and is manually operable from one end of the portion 13 to slide the jaw element 24 away from the slot 22 to release the tape end. The jaw element 24 is provided with a conical bore 31 which aligns with an axial bore in the partition 18 when the jaw is in the retracted position. The cam comprises a push button 32 having a rod 33 with a conical section 34 which engages the conical bore 31 of the jaw 24. The rod 33 has an extension 36 which extends through the axial bore in the partition 18 and is secured by a nut 37. When the button 32 is pushed axially into the portion 13 the jaw 24 slides to open the slot 22, a tape end is inserted and the button released whereby the spring 27 causes the jaw 24 to slide to clamp the tape end. The clamping surface of the jaw 24 is preferably profiled to provide a relatively small clamping surface whereby any misalignment of the tape is automatically corrected when the tape is tensioned during winding. The hub 12 is preferably positioned in a cassette comprising side walls 44, 52 by means of elements 54, 64 and 57. One end of the hub is provided with a flange 41 having a stepped and shouldered periphery loosely fitting in a stepped and shouldered opening in the wall 44. The element 54 carries a deformable driving element 66 mating with alternately raised and recessed portions on the flange 41. The other end of the hub is provided with a flange 46 spaced from the end of the hub whereby the element 57 may surround the end of the hub to bear against elements 47 and 49 to compress a spring 48. When the elements 54 and 57 are removed, the spring 48 urges the element 49 into frictional engagement with an element 51 mounted in the wall 52 of the cassette whereby the hub is prevented from rotating, and spillage of tape cannot occur. The hub and partition may be moulded in one piece, but preferably the partition is permanently joined to the hub by a press-fitted pin.
