Abstract

1300472 Evaporation plant; concentration of distillers spent wash APV CO Ltd 16 July 1971 [12 Aug 1970] 38953/70 Heading BIB Distillers spent wash, or other liquor which contains dissolved solids, is concentrated by evaporation in a series of primary evaporation stages A1, A2, A3, and two further evaporator stages Cl, C2; there also being connected, between stages A1 and A2, an evaporator B which is operated under pressure and heated by live steam (e.g. at 120 psi) supplied through line 19 and a thermo-compressor 21 which entrains some of the vapour evolved from the liquor as it flows through evaporator B, that portion of the vapour not entrained by compressor 21 being passed through line 24 for use as heating-medium in stages C1 and C2. In the plant shown, stages A1 A2, A3 are associated with mechanical compressors for the vapour; and the compressed vapours are used for heating these stages. Stages C1 and C2 may be plate-type evaporators. Distillers spent wash containing 1.4% dissolved solids is pumped through line 2 to evaporator Al; and the final concentrate containing 30% solids is withdrawn from evaporator C2 and separator 53 by pump 54. Evaporator Al is operated by compressor 8. The uncondensed vapours and the condensate leaving the heating elements of Al pass to separator 11. The separated vapour flows through line 14 and may be used to preheat the feed liquor. Similarly the separated condensate (together with that from stages B, A2 and A3) in line 13 may be used in a preheating heat exchanger, and constitutes a supply of soft water. Part of the liquor withdrawn from each of the stages A1, B, A2, A3, is recycled to the stage from which it is withdrawn, and the remainder is passed to the succeeding stage. Evaporators A2 and A3 are operated by a single compressor 33.
