Abstract
1301146 Locking nuts E S COMLEY 31 March 1970 [31 March 1969] 15175/70 Heading F2H To prevent theft, a car radio 10 or other unit is secured to fixed structure 12 by nuts 18 which are locked by a ratchet device which allows the nuts to be tightbned but prevents them from being loosened. Holes must be drilled through the nuts to release the ratchet pawls. Threaded studs 14 rigid with the unit 10 are passed through holes 32 in the dashboard 12 and/or a trimplate 20. In Figs. 1, 5, a washer 22 has resilient tongues 24 forming pawls engageable with blind bores (28), (Fig. 2, not shown), in the underside of a nut 18, and tabs 26 which engage in holes 30 in the trimplate or dashboard. The nut is flat and circular, and is tightened by a pin spanner. A modified washer 56, Fig. 11, has a wave-like form, with a pin 58 or tab extending axially from each crest to engage blind bores (64), (Fig. 9, not shown), in the nut and resilient tongues 28À1 in the trimplate 20À1, Fig. 12, the washer being housed in an annular channel (62) in the underside of the nut. A further modification, eliminating the washer, comprises one or more sprung pins 76 housed in the nut 18À2, Fig. 14, and engageable with the tongues 28À1 of the trimplate 20À1. Instead of the sprung pins, resilient tongues may be provided on the nut. To free the nut, holes are drilled through it in alignment with the bores 28 or 64, or the pins 76, using a drilling jig (40) (Fig. 15, not shown), a pin spanner being used to hold down the tongues 24 or pins 58 while loosening the nut. In the case of nuts 18À2, the pins 76 are extracted to allow loosening of the nut.
