Abstract

1301156 Measuring borehole attitude electrically SOC D’APPLICATIONS GENERALES D’ELECTRICITE ET DE MECANIQUE 15 June 1970 [19 June 1969] 28811/70 Heading G1N Apparatus for determining the angle between the axis of a borehole and (a) the vertical, (b) a horizontal reference direction, comprises a rotating member coaxial with the borehole drilling line, producing spaced electrical pulses whose intervals represent the required angular values. As shown Fig.1, a motor 12 supported coaxially with a borehole drilling line 1, carries a yoke 5 defining a horizontal axis ZZ perpendicular to the borehole axis XX, from which is supported a pendulum 7 defining the vertical axis. The motor running at a constant speed drives a shaft 13 coupled to pinions 14, 15, 17 mounted on the three axes XX, ZZ and vertical respectively. The pinion 15 freely mounted on the yoke 5 carries a member 19 which co-operates with (a) a fixed member 21 maintained in the vertical axis by association with the pendulum 7, to produce a first pulse when they overlap, and (b) a fixed member 20 maintained by the yoke 5 in the XX axis, to produce a second pulse when they overlap, the interval between the pulse corresponding to the inclination of the XX axis from the vertical. The direction of the magnetic North, constituting the horizontal reference direction, is determined by a flux gate compass 16 comprising a slotted disc core 51 Fig. 5 symmetrically wound with an AC energizing coil 53 which saturates the core on each half cycle. A pick-up coil A is wound over a small angle of the core defining a diameter DA, and the core is driven with pinion 17. The double frequency signal in coil A is fed to a detector which produces a pulse when it passes through zero, indicating that diameter DA is perpendicular to the direction of the earth’s magnetic field, and a perpendicular axis YY coincides with the magnetic North. The compass 16 also carries a member 23 which produces a pulse when it passes a fixed member 24 defining the XX axis, and the interval between these pulses corresponds to the horizontal angle between the XX axis and the magnetic North. A fifth pulse is obtained from a rotating member 26 and a fixed member 27 on the drilling line 1, defining the angular position of the motor shaft relative to the drilling line. The complete assembly is contained in a sealed section of the drilling line. Alternative means for producing a pulse defining the vertical comprises a conductive ball 190 (Figs 3, 4) running on two rails 192, 193 as the assembly is rotated in a vertical plane by pinion 15. Rail 192 is conductive and rail 193 is part conductive, part insulating, whereby the ball 190 opens and closes a circuit between the rails and one of these changes is arranged to occur when the assembly is at the lowest point, defining the vertical relative to the axis of pinion 15.
