Abstract

130,335. Liedstrand, K. E. L. July 23, 1918, [Convention date]. Selective punching and perforating machines. – Selective apparatus for punching slots in cards for statistical or other purposes comprises a machine having a series of dies adapted to be moved relatively to the card to bring the required die into the operative position, and a card-carriage arranged to be moved step by step to position the card under the dies. The card is held, by a frame 5, on a carriage 1, supported by rollers journaled in the frame of the machine and movable for removal &c. of the card by means of racks and pinions 9 driven by an electric motor &c. through a clutch 15 adapted to be engaged and disengaged by a lever 17 actuated by a manually-operable rod 22. The carriage is held in the position shown in Fig. 3, for placing the card thereon, by catches 31 until these are withdrawn by a cam-piece 33 moved by a manually-operable rod 32; the carriage can then be moved to the left, Fig. 3, for positioning the card under the dies by means of a weight or a spring until projections 34, Fig. 4, strike a second carriage 35 slidable on the carriage 1. This second carriage has rack teeth formed thereon engaged by pinions 36 mounted on the shaft 37 of an escapement wheel 38 which co-operates with a double pawl 39, 40 adapted to be manuallyactuated by a key-plate 49 through a lever 46, a link 44, and an arm 43, so that each depression of the key-plate the card-carriage moves a step to the left. After all the required slots have been punched in the card, the carriage is moved back to the starting position by the electric motor &c. until the position shown in Fig. 3 is reached, when a projection on the carriage swings the lever 17 and disengages the clutch, thus bringing the carriage to rest; the frame 5 is also released from its catches 7 and springs up, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, to allow removal of the card. The slots are punched by means of dies mounted en arms pivotally carried on shafts 58, 59, Fig. 2, secured to a carriage 61 movable in guides in the frame; the dies are normally held raised by springs 63 and are each provided with a matrix 64. The die-carriage is movable to position the dies under the hammer 74 by means of a rack engaged by a swinging-toothed segment 66 moved, through a gear-wheel 68 and a gear-wheel 69 pivoted at 70, by an arm 71 having a handle 72 with a pin 100 thereon; the arm is moved to engage notches in the frame numbered to indicate which dies are under the hammer 74. The hammer is fixed to a shaft 75, Fig. 3, and is operated by a continuously rotating eccentric 77; it is normally to one side of the eccentric, but may be moved thereunder by sliding the shaft 75 endways against a spring 94. The sliding is performed by a spring 93 adapted to be given the requisite tension by one arm of a bell-crank lever 87 actuated through a link 85 by a lever-arm 83 moved by .the depression of a key-plate 82 by the pin 100. When the hammer is depressed, thereby moving the dies downwards, a screw 98 strikes a catch 97, thereby decreasing the tension of the spring 93 and allowing the spring 94 to retract the shaft 75 and thus remove the hammer from under the eccentric, one blow only at a time thus being given to the hammer; the arm 71 may be arranged to actuate the key-plate 49. In order to indicate which section of the card is under the eccentric, an indicator is provided comprising a disk 107, with figures thereon corresponding to the numbered sections of the card, adapted to be moved through gearing by the escapement shaft. The dies as described above are located opposite to each other in pairs, the total length of the dies in each pair being constant; in order to obtain slots whose inner ends coincide, each pair thus forming a single slot, a single die may be employed carried by an arm pivoted to the matrix which is movable longitudinally of the die. Slots extending inwardly from two parallel lines and having a constant total length may also be obtained, the die comprising a number of adjacent laminae of the same length, a movable piece equal in length to one lamina being located in the matrix and movable therein to positions under the various laminae, thus preventing the operation of the particular lamina under which it lies. Curved or segmental slots may also be obtained; in this case one die only is used. For obtaining cards with slots arranged in two perpendicular directions, the card-carriage may be movable in two directions at right-angles to each other. In a modification, the card may be stationary and the hammer &c. and the die-carriage may be movable in relation to the card. Specifications 101,224 and 126,624, [both in Class 106 (iv), Indicating &c.], are referred to.
