Abstract
1304749 Sewing machines UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO 13 Aug 1970 [14 Aug 1969] 38978/70 Heading DIG A work hold-down plate 107 for feeding workpieces along a work table surface to the stitching point of a sewing machine is carried by a laterally movable carriage 96 mounted on a longitudinally movable carriage 94, the carriages being moved by a cable 52 connected to a follower 55 mounted on the carriage 96 and moving in a slot 56 in a stationary plate 57, whereby the plate 107 moves over the table surface in a path defined by the contour of slot 56. The sewing machine motor 17 drives the sewing machine through a pulley 14 and through belts 23, 30, a reduction gear 34 the output of which drives, through an electromagnetic clutch, a pulley 40 to which cable 52 is attached. A second cable 66, attached to follower 55, is always maintained under tension by a pulley 65 urged in the clockwise direction by a compressed air motor 78. The clutch in the drive of pulley 40 is energised at 90v to move member 55 on its forward stroke against the pull of cable 66 and is energised at 17v for the retraction stroke by cable 66 to maintain cable 52 under slight tension. A compressed air motor 140 is energised to force a plastics button 141 against the top of the plate 107 during sewing and a compressed-air actuated piston rod 115a lifts the holder 107 away from the table at the end of sewing. An expanding pulley 28 is adjusted by a knob 31a to adjust the transmission ratio of the belt drive 30. The whole sewing cycle is controlled automatically by an electric circuit Fig. 11A (not shown) and is initiated by depression of a treadle 135. This deenergises motor 115 to allow plate 107 to drop down on to the work and energises motors 20, 140 to actuate the clutch lever 19 of main motor 17 and force the button 141 on to plate 107. Simultaneously clutch 38 is energised at the higher voltage to operate pulley 40 to move the carriages 94, 96, so that the plate 107 and workpiece moves in the predetermined path past the sewing needle 13. Near the end of stitching a photoelectric cell in the table is uncovered by plate 107 and is energised by a lamp 142 which starts a timer unit which, after a predetermined interval to ensure completion of the stitching, deactuates clutch 19 to stop the sewing machine, deenergises motor 140 to raise the button 141, and reduces the voltage, to clutch 38 so that it reverts its slipping operation enabling return of the follower 55 and the carriage by the pulley 65. At full retraction carriage 94 opens a switch which energises motor 115 to lift the plate 107 for removal of the work. The plate 107 may include a pivoted sector (211), Fig. 16 (not shown), which is automatically moved aside prior to stitching to enable inspection of the workpiece and is automatically returned to its normal position before stitching commences.
