Abstract

1305446 Blowing and coating glassware OWENS ILLINOIS Inc 2 July 1970 32106/70 Heading C1M Hollow glassware is formed with a bonded metal oxide coating by treating the porous moulding surface 17 of a blowing mould 16 with a vaporizable solution containing a pyrolysable metal compound convertible to a metal oxide, which is absorbed in the pores of surface 17, enclosing a pre-formed hollow glass parison 10 by the mould so that the heat therefrom converts the solution to a vapour between the glass 10 and the surface 17, relatively rotating the glass 10 and mould 16 and blowing the parison 10 to expand it into the mould 16. On removal of the mould, the hollow glassware has a bonded metal oxide coating due to pyrolysing the metal compound by heat of the glass. The parison 10 may be formed from a ribbon of glass, the mould then being rotated thereabout. Metals whose compounds are suitable include Zn, Cd, Al, In, Tl, Si, Ti, Ge, Zr, Sn, Pb, Th, Nb, Sb, Cu, V, Bi, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni. Compounds suggested are halides, particularly chlorides, sulphates and nitrates and organic compounds which can be dissolved or dispersed in water. Titanium and tin are the preferred metals and a number of examples are given. The mould may be dipped in the solution or a spray 13 may be used, which in a ribbon machine will replace the normal cooling water spray.
