Abstract
1306651 Gas turbine engines air intakes ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd 2 March 1971 5802/71 Headings F1G and F1J The invention relates to an air intake for a gas turbine engine and to means of attenuating noise during certain phases of engine operation. The engine shown is a gas turbine ducted fan engine comprising a fan 14 rotatable within a duct 18 defined by a cowl member 16 which is of double-wall form, a series of openings 24 being formed in the inner wall of the cowl. Series of panel members 26, 28 are associated with each opening 24, the inner panel 26 being movable between a position in which it closes the opening 24 and an operative position radially inward of the first position. Both surfaces of the panel member 26 are covered with sound absorbing material. The outer panel 28 is formed of parts 28a, 28b pivotally connected at 30 and parts 28c, 28d pivotally connected at 32. The panel 28 is inter-connected with the panel 26 such that when the panel 26 is disposed in the opening 24, the panel 28 is retracted within the hollow interior of the cowl 16, and when the panel 26 is moved inwardly to its operative position within the air intake duct 20 the panel 28 is moved inwardly so as to be disposed within the opening 24. The inner surface of the panel 28 is covered with sound absorbing material. The panel 28 is formed of four parts 28a, 28b, 28c, 28d the parts 28a, 28b being hingedly connected at 30 and the parts 28c, 28d being hingedly connected at 32. A link 36 is pivotally connected to the panel 26 at 40 and to the panel member 28a the link being enclosed within a fairing 34. Similarly a pair of links 36a, 36b is pivotally mounted on the panel 26 and is secured to the panel member 28c, the links being enclosed within fairings 34a, 34b. Actuators 54 are connected by linkage 56, 38a to the links 36a, 36b and by linkage 56, 58, 60, 62, 38 to the links 36. The rearward end of the panel member 28b carries rollers 42 which engage in cam grooves 44 in fixed structure. Similarly the panel member 28d carries rollers 42a which engage in cam grooves 44a in fixed structure. The arrangement is such that the panel members are movable between the retracted position shown in broken lines towards an operative position as indicated by full lines. In a second embodiment the outer panel 74 is formed in one piece and is pivotally mounted at its rearward end 76 to the cowl 16. Bellcrank levers 80, 82 are pivotally connected to the panel at points 84, one arm of each bellcrank lever being pivotally connected to the inner panel member 70 and the other arms of the two bellcrank levers being connected by a link 92. The forward end of the link 92 carries a roller 86 which engages in a cam groove 88 formed in fixed structure. An actuator 78 is connected to the outer panel 74 and the arrangement is such that as the outer panel 74 is pivoted inwardly so as to be disposed within the opening 72 in the cowl wall the inner panel 70 is moved to an operative position within the duct and parallel to the inner wall of the cowl.
