Abstract
1306695 Tonometers AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 28 May 1970 [28 May 1969] 25865/70 Heading A5K [Also in Division H3] A device for controlling the operation of an air puff tonometer, comprises means 50 for sensing cardiac pulse signals, a ramp voltage waveform generator 52, responsive to the ouput of sensor 50 and generating successive ramp waveforms the generation of each of which is initiated by detection of a cardiac pulse signal and terminated by the detection of the following cardiac signal, means- 54 for deriving a voltage equal to the peak ramp waveform voltage, means 48 for deriving a voltage which is a selectable percentage of said peak voltage, and means 58 for comparing said selected voltage with the instantaneous ramp waveform voltage and, when the selected voltage and ramp voltage are equal, for supplying a signal to means 60 for actuating the firing of an air puff at a point in each cardiac cycle corresponding to the percentage of said peak voltage selected. A signal from a plethysmograph, or an EKG signal, is ‘amplified and shaped by circuit 50 to produce short output pulses, the periodicity of which is that of the heart beat, which initiate discharge of a 0.5 mfd capacitor in the ramp generator 52 to terminate a ramp waveform. The output of generator 52 is passed to a peak reader 54, which derives a voltage equal to the peak value of the ramp voltage waveform, and to the coincidence detector 58. The output of peak reader 54 passes to a circuit 56, which derives a pulse rate reading which is displayed on a meter, and to a potential divider in circuit 48. An adjustable tap in circuit 48 applies a selected percentage of the peak ramp voltage to circuit 58, which, when coincidence is detected, fires a thyristor in circuit 60 controlling a solenoid, which, providing a tonometer trigger switch has previously been operated, then allows a fluid pulse to be fired at the eye for determination of the intraocular pressure. Adjustment of the tap in circuit 48 alters the time between the commencement of a cardiac cycle and the instant of intraocular pressure measurement in that cycle.
