Abstract

1307072 Reactor pressure vessels UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 19 April 1971 [6 March 1970] 11002/70 Addition to 1139406 Heading G6C A pressure vessel for an integral, pressurized water reactor is formed of a cylindrical cast iron body consisting of a stack of annular members and a base closure member, a top closure member, and a row of steel bolts clamping the members between a pair of steel loadbearing end plates. A steel annular member sealed between the body and the top closure member supports the core and heat exchanger. The annular members and the base closure member are each divided into a number, e.g. three, arcuate parts which are interlocated relative to each other by dowels or keys. The cast iron body is pre-stressed by wrapping multiple turns of wire about its external periphery to form a girdle extending over its entire length.
