Abstract

1307268 Tandem axle suspension BRITISH LEYLAND TRUCK & BUS DIVISION Ltd 29 July 1971 [5 Aug 1970] 37714/70 Heading B7D A tandem axle suspension comprises a bracket 11 attached to each side member 40 of a vehicle chassis, a pair of driven axles 12, 13 having axle carriers 14, 15 at each end, radius arms 21, 22 pivotably connected between the lower ends of the carriers 14, 15 and the adjacent bracket 11, a tapered leaf spring 16 pivotably mounted on each bracket 11 with its ends connected to the upper ends of the adjacent carriers 14, 15, and a cross member 25 bolted to the brackets 11 through the chassis members 40. The spring 16 is clamped to a trunnion 17 pivotably mounted by means of a rubber bush 18 on a tube 19 secured between two pressings 11a, 11b forming the bracket 11 by a bolt 20. The radius arms 21, 22 are pivotably connected to the carriers 14, 15 and bracket 11 by spherical rubber bushes 23, 24. The crossmember 25 is fabricated from two metal pressings welded together and is shaped so as to have its greatest horizontal section moduli at its ends. A further cross-member 26 connects the lower ends of the brackets 11. Rubbing plates 51 of hardened steel transmit slewing loads between the spring 16 and bracket 11.
