Abstract
1318432 Film splicing devices EASTMAN KODAK CO 11 June 1970 [16 June 1969] 59958/ 71 Divided out of 1318431 Heading G2C A device for feeding splicing tape to the ultrasonic web-splicing device of Specification 1318431 comprises a carriage which moves lengthwise of the tape to carry the tape forward on its forward stroke, and having means to prevent the tape from moving with the carriage on its backward stroke. Specification 1318431 describes how the ends of two strips of a web such as thermoplastic photographic film are brought together, a patch of splicing tape applied to the ends, and a splice made by applying ultrasonic energy. As shown, a carriage C is moved to the left from the retracted position of Fig. 1 (not shown) to the operative position of Fig. 2 by means of a pneumatic cylinder 28. This movement unrolls a length of splicing tape P from a roll (not shown). The carriage has pairs of wheels 59 and 63 rolling on respective tracks 61, 65. Near the end of its stroke the front end of the carriage is lifted up by engaging with a cam surface, so that the forwardly protruding end of the tape is carried up into contact with the bottom surface of the ultrasonic horn 27. An arm 49 is pivoted anti-clockwise by another cam arrangement, so actuating a knife K to cut off the end of the tape, which is then held against the bottom of the horn by suction. The carriage thus moves to the right again and during this movement an arm 72 carrying a pair of needles 73, which have been pivoted out of contact with the tape by a cam arrangement, are drawn back again by a spring, so that during the last part of the reverse stroke the needles engage the tape P. The tape is thus prevented from moving back with the carriage, so that in effect it is moved forward relative to the carriage. Thus the forward end of the tape is once more protruding.
