Abstract

1318886 Master cylinders for brakes and clutches; clutch control GIRLING Ltd 9 Sept 1970 [16 Sept 1969] 45562/69 Headings F2F and F2L A master cylinder assembly for operating brakes or clutches has a first piston 4 movable in a bore 3, a second piston 8 movable by pressure fluid therefrom in a bore 9, its movement in the forward direction being limited by an abutment formed by a valve stem 16, outlets 25, 26 to respective hydraulic circuits, a first normally closed valve 13, a second valve 14 and a third valve formed by the piston 4 and a radial port 6, axial movement of piston 4 closing the third valve and subjecting the space 7 to fluid pressure which simultaneously acts on piston 8 to close the second valve and open the first so that fluid under pressure is supplied direct to outlet 25 and to outlet 26 from a high pressure source, such as an accumulator, via valve 13 to operate a slave cylinder 17 having a stepped bore 19 within which works a differential piston assembly including a piston part 21, for actuating a clutch lever through a rod 22, and a smaller piston part 23 working in a portion 24 of the bore. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, a piston assembly 35 is held in abutment with rod 22 by a spring 39 and pressure from space 7 acts on an annular portion 36 of the piston, the pressure from the high pressure source acton an annular portion 37. In a modification (not shown) the valve part and secondary piston part receives fluid pressure from a separate master cylinder forming an assembly therewith.
