Abstract

1319058 Boots &c BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 8 Sept 1970 [9 Sept 1969 24 Sept 1969] 44514/69 and 47015/69 Heading A3B A lasting machine includes a last support,’ means for pulling the upper toewardly about the last and a pair of side grippers mounted at opposite sides of the last, the arrangement being such that the side grippers move from an inoperative position towards the last until they engage the sides of the last, then move downwardly until the lasting margin is between the jaws of the grippers, and the jaws then close and move upwardly to tension the upper about the last. As described the side gripper units, together with associated hold-downs, are incorporated in a lasting machine of the type described in Specification 1,250,620. Each side gripper 160 consists of a first jaw 162 fixed to a slide 302 and a movable jaw 164 formed on a lever 170 which is pivoted at 168 to the slide 302. The opposite end of the lever 170 is connected to the piston rod 178 of a cylinder 180. Operation of the cylinder 180 initially causes the jaws 162, 164 to close and further movement of the piston rod 178 causes the slide 302, together with the jaws 162, 164 to rise to tension the upper. A crook shaped hold down 308 is fixed to the bracket 304 which carries the cylinder 180. The gripper/ hold-down assembly is mounted on the piston rod (not shown) of cylinder 188 which is mounted for pivotal movement in the machine by block 194 and pins 192, 196. The lengthwise position of the grippers is determined by screw 224 which rotates the cylinders 188 about pins 196. The cylinders can be moved widthwise by piston and cylinder arrangement 246. The machine operates as follows:- after the upper has been pulled about the heel end of the last by the toe pincers 24, cylinder 246 is operated to move the grippers 160 inwardly until plates 202 contact the sides of the last as shown in Fig. 3. Cylinders 188 then move the gripper/hold-down assemblies downwardly until rolls 310 on the hold-down 308 contact the insole. Cylinders 180 are then operated to close the gripper jaw 162, 164 and then raise them to tension the upper. The machine then lasts the heel end of the shoe is described in Specification 1,250,620. In a modification (not shown) the slide 302 is replaced by a plate mounted for heightwise movement by a parallel linkage arrangement.
