Abstract
1324308 Dual master cylinders BENDIX CORP 28 March 1972 [12 April 1971] 14435/72 Heading F2F The axial length of a dual system brake master cylinder is reduced by arranging the two pistons telescopically one within another. Thus, the secondary piston 40 which pressurizes space 96 to energize the front brakes 12 over lead 24, slides within the hollow primary piston 38 which is actuated by pedal lever 84 and serves to pressurize space 94 feeding rear brakes 14 over line 26. The pistons are held in the retracted position shown by a preloaded spring 54 which spaces the pistons and by springs 64 and 66 which bias piston 40 to its non-braking position. The preloading of spring 64 is maintained by a cage 74 which is secured by bolt 76 and which has a flange 78. In the released position, shown, this flange and the rim 58 of the secondary piston dislodge valves 114 of conventional design to allow passage of fluid from reservoirs 104 to the spaces 94, 96. These valves are spring-loaded to allow fluid to be sucked into the master cylinder when it is ‘pumped’ by the pedal.
