Abstract

1324393 Zeolitic molecular sieve agglomerates UNION CARBIDE CORP 23 July 1970 [24 July 1969] 35662/70 Heading C1A Hardened agglomerates of crystalline zeolite molecular sieve crystals are prepared by forming an initial agglomerate of compacted molecular sieve crystals, applying a substantially uniform thin continuous coating of a finely divided mixture comprising from 78% to 90% diaspore and from 10% to 22% clay by weight to the agglomerate, impregnating the diasporeclay mixture coated agglomerate with an aqueous potassium silicate solution (solids content = 2-4 wt. per cent) and firing the impregnated agglomerate at a temperature (e.g. 1050 to 1220 F.) sufficient to set and harden the silicate. The diaspore-clay mixture may have a particle size less than 350 U.S. mesh and form a coating of between 1 micron and 0À003 inch in thickness. The potassium silicate solution may have a K 2 O : SiO 2 by weight ratio of 0À477 to 0À40 : 1, and from 0À03 to 0À07 pounds of solution solid may be used per pound of agglomerate. Colloidal silica in suspension may also be present in the silicate solution. The agglomerates may be bonded with 5-35 wt. per cent clay (e.g. attapulgite, kaolin, sepiolite, polygorskite, kaolinite, plastic ball clays, bentonite, montmorillonite, illite, chlorite). The clay constituting part of the diaspore-clay mixture may also be one of these clays. The agglomerates may be dried between impregnation and firing. In Example 1, Type 3A molecular sieve crystals (80 parts by weight anhydrous) and attapulgus clay (20 parts by weight anhydrous) were dry blended, water (21 parts) was then added, and spherical bodies were formed by tumbling. 2% of ground diaspore 85%-15% attapulgite clay mixture were tumbled with the spherical agglomerates. The coated agglomerates were soaked for 6 hours at 70 F. in K 2 SiO 3 (2À9% solids), dried, and dried at 625 C. for 30 minutes.
